This page contains information for authors who are thinking of submitting their work to Avalonia for consideration. We will only consider submissions which are sent to us if these guidelines have been taken into consideration by prospective authors.
What we are looking for …
~ Our subject areas include the Western Mystery / Esoteric Tradition; Mythology, Folklore, Ceremonial Magick, Gnosticism, the Grimoire Tradition, Qabalah, Goddess Traditions, Mysticism, Northern Traditions and modern Paganism.
~ We are interested in works which present fresh, original and grounded scholarship within the above subject areas; as well as works which combine scholarship with original practical work.
We are not interested in …
~ “Books of Shadows”; “modern books of spells”; anything that promotes fantasy views of magic; perpetuates outdated histories; or anything written specifically as an attack on another work. We are also not interested in chanelled or received texts of any sort.
~ Fiction or poetry.
Authors …
We prefer to work with authors who
~have had at least some previously published work; but this is not essential;
~are familiar with one and preferably more of our current titles;
~ who are aware that books on niche subjects such as those which we publish will not earn them enough to retire on, and its highly unlikely that any of our authors will be able to give up their day jobs to just write books! (Though I am sure we would all love to!)
~ who are aware that successful authors are ones who are able and willing to promote their work to their readership, usually through articles, book signings, lectures, blogs etc. Of course we will help with this, but make sure that you have realistic goals.
~ who have an absolute passion for their subject and readers; and can be shown to be authorities in their respective fields.
How to submit …
In the first instance, please email admin@avaloniabooks.co.uk with an outline (200-300 words) of the project you would like us to consider. Include with this an author biography, detailing your previous work and experience; as well as an overview of the kind of readers your work is aimed at.
We should be able to tell you if what you are working sounds like something which might fit with our catalogue, however we do not accept books based on descriptions alone and will need to see the completed manuscript in order to make a final decision. Also note that we are a small publishing house, we do not pay advances. If you are unfamiliar with our work we recommend that you obtain at least a couple of books from our catalogue as an example of what we do.
DO NOT send attachments – we will hit “delete” at once.
DO NOT send us your manuscripts in the post – it will go straight into the recycling if you do.
We are currently considering manuscripts for our Autumn 2013 catalogue.
